Malaysia narrowly missed out on a spot in the quarter-finals of the Asian Mixed Team Championship for the first time after a 2-3 loss to archrivals Indonesia in Qingdao, China today.

Having previously reached the last eight in 2017, 2019, and 2023, Malaysia fought determinedly but fell just short in a highly competitive Group B clash.

Indonesia took an early 2-0 lead, with women’s singles world No. 52 K. Letshanaa putting up a strong fight before going down 12-21 19-21 to Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi.

Malaysia responded through men’s singles world No. 28 Leong Jun Hao, who staged an impressive comeback to defeat Yohannes Marcellyno 11-21 22-20 21-12.

Women’s doubles duo Go Pei Kee-Teoh Mei Xing battled for 86 minutes but narrowly lost 18-21 21-7 17-21 to Meilysa Trias Puspitasari-Rachel Rose, sealing Indonesia’s victory.

Despite the overall result, Malaysia finished the tie on a strong note as men’s doubles world No. 12 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun edged world No. 16 Shohibul Fikri-Daniel Marthin in a thrilling 25-27 21-17 23-21 win after 65 minutes of intense play.

With this result, Indonesia and Hong Kong progressed to the quarter-finals from Group B, while Malaysia will look to regroup and come back stronger in future competitions.
